Our Programs

Our goal

is that each student have comprehensive progression with his or her acquisition of the English language.

Upon leaving a ULI class, each student:

  • has achieved a higher level of understanding of the topic being presented,
  • is equipped to replicate the information learned,
  • has collaborated with other students and the instructor.

ULI primarily implements the Communicative Approach for teaching English to adult learners. Personalised activities are utilised to engage each student in meaningful communication. Our intention is active engagement and participation by everyone in the class.

Instructors

Catherine Doyle holds an honours degree in English Literature from London University and has twenty years experience of teaching English.

Course Overview

Each course offered is six weeks long. Each week, students enrolled in this course will have 15 hours of classroom tuition hours, resulting in 90 classroom hours throughout the length of the course. Classes are held Monday through Friday for three hours each evening. In addition to classroom instruction for each course offered, ULI will provide opportunities for students to become engaged within the community and familiar with various aspects of Irish culture.

ENG100: Introduction to English

This course provides an introduction to English grammar and speaking English in the context of learning about locations, feelings, days and celebrations, travel, and personal goals. At completion of level, students are able to understand: basic greetings and phrases, simple questions about themselves, very short dialogues, numbers, prices, times, and short simple directions.

ENG101: Basic English

Instruction in English grammar and speaking English, utilising audio, speaking and written exercises, in the context of learning about people, possessions, daily activities, the work environment, etc. At completion of level, learners should be able to read, speak and write to: manage simple routine exchanges, identify topics or information in a discussion, handle simple business within a community; understand directions, extract essential information from recorded passages, understand main point in short, clear messages and announcements.

ENG102: Becoming Familiar English

Upon completion of level, learners should be able to understand speech and writing on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc., understand main point of TV programmes with familiar topics when delivery is slow and clear.

 

Tutoring

If a student desires to improve the rate of his or her language acquisition, or if the student is not progressing as expected, ULI will be happy to provide resources for additional tutoring.
